iPod Touch Speed Test Confirms What We Already Knew: It's Fast, Real Fast

September 15, 2009

Apple recently introduced two new iPod touch models at their exclusive "Rock and Roll" media event, and just to be clear, the two new models are the 32GB and 64GB versions, as the 8GB remains the same as last year.  It was at this event that Apple claimed the new devices were "up to 50 percent faster" than previous generations.  Macworld decided to test the new devices to see if Apple's claim would hold up. Macworld used a variety of speed tests to gauge the overall performance of the devices.  They first measured the amount of time it took to boot to the home screen.  They then measured how long it took to launch games, such as Peggle, Homerun Battle 3D, and Rolando 2.  They also measured the amount of time it took to load NYTimes.com.  Finally, they utilized the Sunspider Javascript benchmark. As you can see from the chart above, the new iPod touch is able to meet Apple's performance claims.  The real test, however, will be comparing the new iPod touch to the new iPhone 3GS.  They basically share the same internals, so it should be a pretty close fight. Is this fairly large speed bump enough to warrant a new iPod touch purchase for any of you out there?  How about you gamers?
