Smule's New iPhone App Auto-Tunes Your Voice, T-Pain Style

September 4, 2009

Smule, the creators of hit iPhone music apps like Ocarina and Leaf Trombone, have partnered with hip hop/R&B star T-Pain to bring you a brand new iPhone app that utilizes Antares' Auto-Tune technology to make your singing voice sound pitch perfect. You don't need to know who T-Pain is or what Auto-Tune is to enjoy Smule's I Am T-Pain, but here is a crash course anyway.  T-Pain, along with many other artists, use Antares' Auto-Tune technology to change the pitch of their voices to make it sound unique or to disguise inaccuracies.  The technology has become standard equipment in professional recording studios and somehow Smule was able to cram it into an iPhone app. So how does I Am T-Pain work?  Simply launch the app and choose your favorite song, or you can choose to go freestyle.  The app allows you to sound like T-Pain, or you can customize the settings in a variety of ways and save them as presets for later use.  Once the song starts playing you just sing along with the lyrics that are displayed on the screen and your voice will be auto-tuned.  After you are finished recording, you can listen to your song or share it via email, Facebook, or MySpace. I Am T-Pain is available in the App Store for $2.99, and it features five of T-Pain's top songs along with three generic beats.  Five more tracks can be downloaded for $.99 via in-app purchasing, and Smule intends to add even more later on.  Smule recommends that you use the app with your iPhone's bundled headphones with built-in microphone.  I Am T-Pain is only compatible with the iPhone and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later. Since words can't really describe what the app is capable of, we have embedded a video below that includes not only T-Pain, but a variety of other people giving it a try.  Check it out.
