The Battle Between Palm And Apple Continues, iTunes 9 Kills Palm Pre Sync
September 10, 2009
According to PreCentral, the newly launched iTunes 9 once again brought upon the death of media syncing for the Palm Pre.
The big question on everybody's mind: does it break Palm Pre Sync? Pre users in this thread are downloading now and the verdict is yes, Palm Pre Sync appears to be busted.
This is actually the second time Apple has succeeded in blocking Palm's competing device. Apple initially disabled the functionality with the release of iTunes 8.2.1, but Palm released a fix not long after which re-enabled the syncing.
It will be interesting to see how Palm responds to this recent development. According to MacRumors, they have already reported Apple to the USB compliance organization "for improper use of the Vendor ID used to identify devices using the USB interface," which is kind of ironic considering Palm was improperly using Apple's USB Vendor ID by presenting the Pre as an iPod.
Sadly, in the end, the only ones really losing out here are Pre users. Or maybe that's not so sad? Depends which side of the fence you are on I guess.
