Update
Since we originally looked at Max Injury two updates have come out. The first added a halloween themed level as well as a zombie and teddy bear costume for Max. The most recent 1.05 update added three new levels plus OpenFeint online high scores for each level (no achievements). Max Injury already had online high scores, they were just out of app, so OpenFeint is nice, but not groundbreaking. In total there are four new levels which are just more of the same with nothing really new. The Max Injury updates don't change the overall score, and since we reviewed it Stair Dismount was released making this game less appealing in comparison.
Overview
Max Injury is a rag doll physics game where you’re object is to inflict the most damage on a crash test dummy. There are different environments from stairs, to many concrete walls in mid air. Most of the levels have objects you try to hit to increase your points. The crash test dummy is named Max, and your points are based on what parts of his body hit, and how hard they hit. There's also a lite version to try.
Features
Max Injury with its most recent update provides 12 levels of dummy smashing fun. A deluxe 3D physics engine is included to try to make it realistic. Online high scores are included for all levels, to compete to cause the most pain. A neat feature is the ability to insert a picture on the face of the dummy. Now you can do some voodoo doll type punishment to your enemies. The levels provide a certain number of “fingers” which is how many times you can interact with the dummy.
The Good
The 3D physics engine feels completely authentic. It represents exactly how I think a body hitting various objects would react. A great example is when his head hits the side of a wall, and his whole body spins around in mid air. The gameplay is quite fun with a great goal of trying to amp up your score by causing the most pain. You don’t need to enjoy this type of humor to have fun tossing Max around. Whether you throw him down the stairs and through boxes, or push him over an edge with multiple objects to hit on his way down it’s a good time. The 3D level design is plain with just concrete stairs or brick walls, etc. The ragdoll, max, is basic just yellow, but you can always add a picture to his face. The scoring pops up in various colors from Max as he makes contact with various objects. Only sound effects are included with no background music. As max smacks off of various things, there are classic comic gag real noises. That’s it, and it becomes very repetitive.
