As we've been announcing for a couple of days now, George Hotz (Geohot) just released a new Jailbreak (Blackra1n) and Unlock (Blacksn0w) solution. So if you want to jailbreak your phone or unlock it here is what to do : First of all you need to be on the latest firmware and baseband, if you're not, just plug your iPhone and press update in iTunes. It's safe to do so. If you're already at 3.1.2 and have already used Blackra1n before and you still have the blackra1n app on your springboard then :
Launch blackra1n app on your iPhone. You will see Icy replaced by an option "ra1n". Install this to upgrade your app. After upgrading, run blackra1n.app again. You will see "sn0w". Install this, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.
In every other case Upgrade to 3.1.2 if you didn't yet.
Go to blackra1n.com, click on the logo corresponding to your operating system, run the app, and click "make it ra1n". When your phone reboots, you'll see blackra1n.app. Run this, install blacksn0w, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.
This is a solution for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, you don't need it for the 2G. If you already jailbroke your iPhone and just want to unlock, a separate Blacksn0w package will be available in cydia soon. Once you're done, do not update your iPhone anymore under any circumstances, Apple will probably come up with a fix soon and you don't want to loose the unlock/jailbreak. If you need even more details, iClarified.com has a walkthrough for Mac or Windows users.
