Call Of Duty: World At War: Zombies Invades The App Store

November 16, 2009

Seemingly out of nowhere, Activision has released a Call of Duty game for the iPhone and iPod touch that is based off of the unlockable zombie-themed multiplayer mode found in the console version of the game. Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies places you in a house with boarded up windows where you will be defending yourself from waves of oncoming zombies.  Zombies will invade the house only slowly at first, but the action ramps up quickly and you will have to guard all entries and board the windows back up to keep them at bay.  Each zombie killed earns you coins, which can be used to purchase more powerful weapons that can be found throughout the building. The game features both single and multiplayer modes, but the point of the game will always be to defend yourself from the zombies.  This isn't a regular Call of Duty game that will have you following a storyline; just zombie slaying mayhem.  Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies also only features a single map, but Activision has promised more will be available in the future via in-app purchase. So what's the upside to a $9.99 game with only one map and game type?  Online multiplayer of course!  The game features two-player local multiplayer over Bluetooth and four-player online multiplayer over Wi-Fi.  It doesn't allow you to play over your Edge or 3G connection, however.  The game also features online leader boards, achievements, and three different control schemes, so hopefully you can find one that works for you. According to early user reviews, the online portion of the game is silky smooth, but the inability to communicate with your teammates is a bit of a drawback.  It will be interesting to see what the additional maps will be priced at considering the game has a relatively high price tag for minimal content.  Still, the production values are high here, so if you are looking for a solid multiplayer experience, this one may well be worth a try.  Or you could just wait for the inevitable price drop.
