Apple Planning A VoIP-Oriented iPhone?

December 13, 2009

Seems like Apple is doing quite some shopping this year, after acquiring LALA last week, Apple would be now in talks to acquire iCall, a VOIP provider. It's really just a rumor for now and iCall's CEO Arlo Gilbert isn't declining or confirming it, but what could this mean? Well, that's the way Apple has always been doing things; they bought NeXt to make the new Mac OS, SoundJam to make iTunes, the iPod, Coverflow... My guess is that they are simply buying some new technologies to prep the next generation of iPhones. Lala for example had recently submitted an app that allowed you to keep your music in a cloud based system and stream music on the cheap. Same  story with iCall whose iPhone app is apparently used by over a 100,000 users. Some VoIP over here, some cloud storage over there and BOUM there you have your next iPhone. Of course you can already call over VoIP but it's messy and the quality is usually not that great. Furthermore this would also explain things like the Google Voice app rejection or why AT&T Wireless' CEO is so nervous lately. What's your take on this one?
