Where On Earth Are All Those iPhones?

December 20, 2009

Anywhere I go around the world, it seems that almost every other person I see owns an iPhone. I'm probably biased by my fanboyism, but after seeing Apple's sales figures, one has to wonder why we don't see even more of them.

Admob, the world's leading supplier of iPhone and iPod touch ads, released a report this Friday that tries to answer that question. Based on their ad impressions, Admob managed to map the distribution of iPod touches and iPhones around the world (see the chart above). This study, based on 25 million devices, allows us to realise a few things:
  • Despite the coverage issues, the iPhone is particularly strong in the US.
  • The most successful markets seem to be the ones where the iPhone has been present since the iPhone 2G.
  • Lastly, the iPhone growth rates in certain countries, like Japan, might drag the American share of  the distribution down drastically over the next year.
