Review: SpinArt

January 29, 2010

Overview

SpinArt is a relatively old app, released September 08, but it's success is definitely new. SpinArt has always been a neat looking app, but seems like once you used it a few times there would be no point to do it again. In SpinArt it's just as you would expect, but without the mess, and on the small iPhone/iPod Touch screen. Just flick the canvas for it to spin, tap on a color, and then tap or hold your finger on screen to make your creation.

Features

45 Colors are included, as well as glitter. There are three sizes of paint blotches to draw with as well. You can use a plain white canvas, or use any image in your photo library. You can also save any of your spin arts to your photo library.

The Good

You can make spin art anytime anywhere with digital files. Any of your creations you can share, and save. You can truly create art on your iPhone by just placing your finger on the screen. The artwork varies depending on how fast you spin the canvas, and how long you hold your finger on screen. Depending on where you tap changes how the colors overlay as well. Every single time you make a spin art creation it will look unique. The interface is straight forward, and easy to use for anyone. Also it's an app for anyone, as you can't but enjoy making spin art whether you're a kid or adult. Just flick to spin the canvas, and to stop either flick in the opposite way or double tap. Watching the artwork come together may be the best part of the app. It's amazing to see the paint splatter slightly away from the line you're creating, and even off the canvas. Seeing the final creation is always a fun surprise as well, and you will definitely want to save and share them.

The Bad

SpinArt is definitely neat, and one of the neatest in the App Store. After a couple of uses though, you've done everything there is to do. The variability comes in that every time you create different artwork, and you can always use your own photos, and splash them with paint. There are no uploading features built into the app, so you can't share to flickr, facebook, twitter, etc. from within the app, but of course you can with those individual apps.

The Verdict

SpinArt is one of the neatest apps in the App Store, and is absolutely perfect for the idevice interface. The artwork you create looks great, and you can share it however you want (though nothing in-app). Every single creation is different, but after one use, you've done everything in the app. It's full fun Spin Art without the mess, and easy to store the images. For a mere $0.99 SpinArt helps you appreciate the iPhone/iPod Touch a little bit more.
