Two Notable Games Get Updated, So Do Our Reviews

January 13, 2010

Updates are an amazing force in the App Store that really makes it a unique place for game development. Not many platforms have updates at all, and usually nothing noteworthy. iPhone games though can be transformed through the update process, and make it a whole new game that is worth a whole new review. We just reviewed Trenches yesterday, and already there is an update. The 1.02 update didn't add any of the main features that have been advertised like extending the campaign mode, new skirmishes, new units, multiplayer, and all kinds of things that could make this game great. We're sadly still waiting. The 1.02 update added troop and weapon balancing for a better sense of strategy, and fixed some potential glitches. Playing the update you can notice the improvement to the units so now more expensive units have an advantage on the battlefield, and being in the trenches is more important. Previously you could just spam the field with general infantry, but now you have to care about assault rifles, machine guns, and mortar fire to be able to win. One minor concern though is that playing zombie horde on the new update, on a 3GS, the game froze with too many objects on screen at once as I approached a score of 700. This just shouldn't happen, especially after an update. The gameplay is improved a little with this update, but not enough to change our review, seen here. V is for Vortex is a Portal inspired game that we reviewed awhile back. Since then the game has been updated three times, with the most recent update finally adding some serious items to change the game completely. 36 new levels have been added bringing the total to 54, and the developer isn't stopping until he passes 100. Also a save system is now included which was a major missing feature. On top of that a new control method is included providing on screen controls, and allowing you to choose the portal color you shoot. Seven achievements are also included (in-app) as well as leaderboards, but those aren't in-app. V is for Vortex experienced a huge change, and consequently we updated our review. Check out the update here. Always keep watch for updated reviews.
