Poynt - Popular BlackBerry Local Search App Hits The App Store
March 4, 2010
Since I have never owned a BlackBerry (RIM) device, I hadn't used Multiplied Media's local search app Poynt until recently, so I really can't share in that "it's just like I remember it" experience. But apparently Poynt for the iPhone is just like many former BlackBerry owners remember it, which appears to be a very good thing.
Poynt is an award-winning BlackBerry app that was recently brought over to the iPhone with most of its features still intact. The free local search app allows you to find businesses, movies, people, and restaurants near you and then gives you the tools to connect with them.
Poynt's interface is extremely clean and easy to navigate. Just tap on one of the four icons and begin your search. Poynt uses your current location to find the nearest and best results for each category. For example, when you search for movies you are given the movie's trailer, showtimes, user ratings, nearest theaters, and the ability to purchase tickets. Once you have decided on a theater, turn your iPhone sideways and a map will appear showing its location. You can also view its location via the augmented reality tab for those of you who want more visual stimulation. Want to call the theater? Just lift your iPhone up to your ear and Poynt will automatically dial the number for you.
It's these little things that have made Poynt so popular amongst BlackBerry users, and Multiplied Media is betting they will do the same for iPhone users.
According to some early user reviews, Poynt for the iPhone is still missing a couple of features that were included in the BlackBerry version. One would be local weather and the other would be local gas prices, but I guess that's what updates are for. Former BlackBerry users are still enjoying the app even without these features, as it currently carries a four-star user rating.
So check out Poynt for free in the App Store to see what all of these BlackBerry users have been clamoring about for so long.
