Looking For A Cheaper Alternative To Numbers? Check Out Mariner Calc For iPad

April 6, 2010

Most iPad owners in need of a good spreadsheet app automatically turn to Apple's Numbers, which is fair considering it is loaded with all kinds of templates, charts, and tables to spice up those boring spreadsheets.  One necessary feature that the app is missing, however, is the ability to export Excel files and not just view them.  This has made quite a few early Numbers adopters a little angry to say the least.  Longtime Mac developer Mariner Software is looking to clean up Apple's little mess by providing a cheaper and Excel-exporting capable alternative in Mariner Calc for iPad. Mariner Calc for iPad may not be as flashy as Numbers, but it will definitely get the job done at a fraction of the cost.  Mariner Calc's most important feature when compared to Numbers is its ability to not only view but edit and export Excel files.  Files can also be wirelessly transferred to and from your computer for quick and easy spreadsheet manipulation while on the go. Frequent spreadsheet users will definitely appreciate the 32,000 row by 256 column support, 145 functions with more to be added via updates, and support for multiple sheets that Mariner Calc contains.  To make creating and editing easier via a touch-based interface, Mariner has employed popovers to access basic features such as fonts, colors, alignment, borders, and more.  The app also contains the usual pane freezing and splitting, cut, copy, and paste, and undo and redo. Mariner Calc is available at the introductory price of $5.99.  In comparison, Numbers is $9.99.  At least now you know you have some options and can make a more informed decision.
