Gleeks Get Their Own App From Smule

April 15, 2010

It’s an iPhone and Glee fan match made in heaven. The hit FOX television show and highly popular musical app developer Smule have combined their creative talents to produce the official Glee app for the iPhone and iPad. Glee is a brand new universal app that is part Rock Band, part I am T-Pain and all fun. The app is essentially a take on the karaoke app giving users the opportunity to sing along to songs from the hit tv show. Music tracks are pulled straight from the show so you can belt out hits right after watching each week’s episodes. Three songs are included with the app ("Rehab," "Somebody to Love," and "You Keep Me Hanging On") with additional songs available as in app purchases.

As Smule has proven with their string of very fun musical apps, they are fully capable of injecting great creativity and value into what would normally just be another standard Karaoke application. Here, the sing along resembles something straight out of the game Rock Band as you sing along to songs while trying to match the pitch of the notes as the words scroll on screen. Back up instrumentals and vocals are provided directly from the show’s soundtrack to help you get in the groove. Like Smule’s other hit, I am T-Pain, wannabe singers can adjust their pitch and improve harmony with tools to control your musical range. Perfect for many of us, aspiring shower singers.

While Smule has created a fun way for users to get  further connected emotionally with Glee the TV show, the developers continue to prove their app innovation by including some great ways to share and collaborate with your musical creations. Songs produced on your own can be easily shared via email or with in app integration with Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. You can even broadcast the results for the rest of the world to hear or sample recordings from other users by tracking them on Smule's Glee Globe using an interface similar to what you saw on their Ocarina app.

No Glee club would be complete without an ensemble of musicians to share in the music making fun and herein lies the greatest strength of the app. You can invite your friends who own the app to sing their own renditions of songs and the app can combine the vocals like layers of a musical track to create a virtual glee club.  If you can't find friends with the app, you can always add your voice to recordings already on the Glee Globe. Either way, the app provides you the chance to create some pretty interesting collaborations and offers plenty of replay value.

For $2.99, the universal app works for both the iPhone and iPad and will provide a tremendous amount of fun for fans of the show. Even if you don't watch Glee, Smule has managed to create a fun way to interact with music and has created another global community to showcase your musical talents.

Glee is available now for $2.99 on the App Store.
