Gowalla For iPad Checks Into The App Store
April 30, 2010
An iPad-optimized version of the popular location-based service, Gowalla, has hit the App Store just in time for you brand new iPad 3G owners to take it for a test drive by stopping at your favorite local hangout on the way back from the Apple Store. The app will of course work on Wi-Fi only iPads, it's just that Gowalla requires a constant Internet connection to work properly, so it is best suited for the iPad 3G.
Gowalla for iPad features the same recognizable green and orange tones that the iPhone app sports, along with a new split pane view that effectively puts the iPad's much larger screen real estate to use.
The left pane is reserved for selecting recent activity, spots, and your passport, and viewing most of this information in list form. The right pane displays all of your selected information on the map. With Gowalla for iPad you are able to check in at your favorite locations, comment on your friends' check-ins, view images from your favorite spots, view recent activity and leaderboards, and basically do almost everything else you can do on the iPhone version of the app.
The app isn't entirely without its issues, but that can be expected for a v1.0 release. Gowalla for iPad has crashed on me a few times already, and sometimes when accessing the pop-over, the left pane will disappear which requires an app restart to fix. Also, the in-app browser's black top-bar remains black if you jump to a different category within the app instead of backing out of the browser first. Still, these are just small issues that don't really have a huge effect on day to day use.
Gowalla for iPad is now available in the App Store for free. Have at it you location-based service addicts!
