Landscape Springboard Comes to the iPhone With SBRotator

April 4, 2010

One of the longest standing complaints about the iPhone's Springboard UI is the lack of an optional landscape mode. While Apple did add this feature to the new iPad, portrait is still the only non-jalibreaking option on iPhone OS. However, a new tweak called SBRotator, available for $1.99 in Cydia or Rock, brings full landscape support to the home screen. When you turn your iPhone on its side, the icons will resize and re-orient themselves to fit to the new direction. The dock pops up on the bottom, and all the app labels are centered in the correct spot. You can even flip the device upside down, and all the icons will look normal again. When flipping the device from portrait to landscape (or vice versa) there is definitely noticeable lag, presumably from resizing all the icons. On the good side, flipping same to same is virtually lag-free. I haven't experienced this myself, but there have been reports of this tweak crashing your device. Nothing too serious, just re-spring to fix it, but it can become a nuisance after a while. This package may not work with other add-ons that overlay the home screen, for example proswitcher is practically unusable in landscape mode. Other than that, there aren't many major problems, and it works very well. Keep in mind that this is version 1.0, and hopefully more updates will be coming soon. Below is our video preview:
