AT&T Mark The Spot Is Actually Serving A Purpose

May 18, 2010

iPhone users with poor AT&T coverage have been reporting their GPS-tagged locations and hoping for some sort of improvement ever since the company first released their coverage feedback app, AT&T Mark the Spot, in early December 2009.  Hoping is the key word here, as many users have seen little to no improvement over the last six months, but it looks as if there may be some light at the end of the tunnel! According to a few TUAW readers, AT&T is sending out free text messages indicating that coverage help is on the way thanks to your feedback.  Below is an example of one of the messages:
AT&T Free Msg: AT&T appreciates your Mark the Spot feedback from Nevada City CA on 12/24/2009. We are pleased to inform you that we have a new cell site planned near your submission in the next 60-90 days. If you have any further comments or feedback, you may reply to this msg for free. Thank you, AT&T.
AT&T has acknowledged that the app is indeed being used to optimize coverage and capacity needs, and that it has already contributed to the network's short and long-term network planning. So, there you have it.  AT&T Mark the Spot wasn't just a PR stunt after all, but that doesn't mean you will be seeing improvements in your area instantly.  Don't let a little progress stop you from reporting those dead spots people.  We have a lot more work to do. Have any of you received a message similar to the one above?
