Carcassonne Coming To iPhone And iPad
May 4, 2010
Thanks to a collaborative effort between The Coding Monkeys and Hans im Glück, iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad owners will be able to play an official mobile version of the German tiled-based strategy board game Carcassonne in the near future.
The Coding Monkeys have set up a developer blog for Carcassonne, which highlights some of the main features and details for the upcoming game. Carcassonne will initially include all of the tiles from the original board game, the ability to play against computer controlled players, and three different multiplayer modes which include pass and play, local (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth), and online modes. All of this will initially be available for the iPhone and iPod touch.
The team intends to add even more features, such as the wide variety of expansion tile sets, and iPad support after the game's initial release. The tile sets will be available as in-app purchases, while iPad support will be a free update.
Carcassonne should be hitting the App Store sometime this month for the introductory price of $4.99. Once the free iPad support update is complete and available in the App Store, the game's price will be raised to $9.99.
Carcassonne has been a favorite among strategy board game enthusiasts since it was first introduced in 2000. The board game received the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award in 2001, which rewards excellence in board and card game design in the German market. The Xbox Live Arcade version of the game, my personal favorite, has also received fairly positive reviews, so it's no wonder that fans are excited for a mobile version.
