iPhone Apps Gone Free: Linez, Starry Night, Mental Maths, And More

May 18, 2010

Today we have a nice assortment of relaxing pick-up-and-play games along with an educational app that will put your mental math skills to the test. Linez ($.99 -> Free): A matching game where you must generate as many points as possible before the board fills up. In Linez, instead of just matching three like-colored tiles you are required to match a total of five before they are removed from the board.  This can become rather difficult since nearly every time you make a move, three new tiles are added to the board in random spots. I said nearly every time because if you are able to match a total of five tiles you are given a free turn where no new tiles are added. The game features unlimited replayability since tiles are randomly placed, local leaderboards, and a tutorial. Linez is available for free for an undisclosed amount of time. Starry Night ($1.99 -> Free): A puzzle game of sorts where you must align the stars to create an image. This game requires a bit of patience.  The idea is to drag your finger around the screen, shifting the stars constantly until you see an image.  Moving your finger too quickly will result in missing the image since you have no clue what you are even looking for, so drag slowly.  Once you realize what the image is, simply keep shifting until the stars align and you will move on to the next level. The game features 60 levels and OpenFeint integration. Starry Night is available for free today only (5/18). Mental Maths ($.99 -> Free): An educational app that will put your mental math skills to the ultimate test. The app contains five different mathematical categories to put anyone's math skills to the test.  Categories include: Basic Arithmetic, Division with Remainder, Percentage Calculation, Reading and Writing Roman Numerals, and Common Multiples and Divisors.  As you solve the problems, an image will fill in like a puzzle giving you some incentive to finish. The app contains four difficulty levels, an adjustable time limit, and stat tracking for multiple users. Mental Maths is available for free today only (5/18). Super Kick Football 3D ($.99 -> Free): A flick field goal kicking game that really makes you appreciate NFL field goal kickers. The game requires you to kick a nicely rendered 3D football through the uprights in order to obtain the highest score.  In each game there are six rounds where the football is placed at different distances, and you have 10 chances per round to kick it through the uprights.  Your score is not only based on how many field goals you have made, but also the accuracy of the kick. The game features OpenFeint integration to provide global leaderboards. Super Kick Football 3D is available for free today only (5/18). Doodle Find (Free): Alright, so this one hasn't gone free, it actually launched for free, but it's worth checking out if you enjoy hidden objects games. Doodle Find features adorable doodle graphics, pick-up-and-play 90 second games, and Facebook integration so you can compare scores with friends. Once again we are lacking in the iPad app department, but there really hasn't been any worthy apps that have gone free lately. If you are itching for a new iPad game, check out Compression HD, which was just released yesterday for free.
