iPhone & iPad App Review: Addicus & Addicus HD

May 11, 2010

Addicus HD ($3.99) by Get Set Games Addicus is a math based matching game where you will need to be on your toes for the fast paced adding. You're given around ten mushrooms of three different colors with different digits 1-9, and there is one number you need to add up to. It's timed to add up to that number, and new numbers keep coming in quick secession.

There are blue, red, and yellow mushrooms, and some numbers will require only one color so you will need to use all yellow for example. Some numbers are easy for example five where you can just tap on a five if available or add two and three or four and one. There are also numbers like 26 and 35 of specific colors or mix and match, but either way you will need multiple mushrooms.

The game is fast paced fun from the first level to as far as you can make it. The time limit of adding to each number is awfully quick, and you'll occasionally freeze up with the simplest math. You'll be adding, seven, eight, six, four, and wait what else do I need to get to 29.

Each new number comes in fast with new colored mushrooms popping up. You really need to keep track of the color of the number you need to add to as that's the best chance to fail of adding in a blue when you only can use red. There are multiple things going on to get a good exercise of your brain.

Now this could be rather bland and boring with just math, but the color scheme, non stop action, and style make it plenty of fun. You'll be coming back for more to this simple premise that has a surprising amount of fun. OpenFeint is also included for online high scores, achievements, and challenges.

Also included is a great environment to play in from forests to the beach as you advance from level to level. The artwork is outstanding to go on top of the great gameplay mechanic. Also included is a very upbeat soundtrack to go with the action of the game.

The game has all kinds of secret bonuses and chain combos as well as a special overdrive mode all based on speed. There are multiple flashes of speed and bonus notifications. This is as fun as you can make a game that subtly trains your brain for fast reaction time of simple math.

The app is available for the iPad ($3.99) and iPhone ($1.99). The only difference between the two versions is HD graphics for the iPad version.

The iPhone version is a great game that is packed with fast paced fun that will no doubt having you play over and over. It's super easy to play with both thumbs tapping on mushrooms on the respective half of the screen. Addicus is should buy for $1.99, and higher if you want some brain training math fun.

The iPad version is a tad bit tougher to maneuver as everything is more spread out, and you'll be pecking at the screen with a few fingers. The iPhone version looks relatively good on the iPad though no where near as finely detailed. For $3.99 Addicus HD is worth considering depending on if you already own an iPhone and how good you want your game to look.
