Review: Linkin Park 8-Bit Rebellion!

May 6, 2010

Overview Linkin Park 8-Bit Rebellion! is a unique game that combines the band with a social connective experience and a side scrolling rpg style. The game is based upon the thoughts and drawings of the six members of the band. The game begins with the premise that PixxelKorp has taken over the world with a mass brain washing campaign to turn the world from the classic 8-bit to a new high-res world. PixxelKorp agents have stolen a track from each of the members of the band, and it's up to you to find them, and take them back. Features The game features six different worlds one for each of the band members with each created from their own designs. Linkin Park songs are included in 8-bit mode for each area, and there are multiple buildings to enter per world. The game has a very strong social connection with every player having their own customizable avatar in the game with friend connectivity with the game profile as well as Facebook and Twitter. The Good The game isn't just another game with a Linkin Park theme, but rather a brand new experience that is definitely rare in the App Store. The game is set up with an overarching story, and then you’re given little missions to complete to advance the story. The missions range from taking down posters and taking snapshots of odd things to beating up enemies and bosses. The game is simply fun, and once you’ve complete the first task you'll want to make it through the whole game. The missions aren't very complex, but they do have a puzzle element to some of them just to find the next task. The environments are definitely complex though, giving you many intricacies in the background that will mean more if you’re a Linkin Park fan, but don't take anything away if you're not. The game is beautifully designed with the high-res world in each of the six locations. The game has a simple control mechanism that works well by just tapping on the left or right side of the screen, and tapping in the middle to attack. Each enemy you defeat increases your leveling score though there aren't the traditional rpg upgrading abilities. You do get to upgrade weapons which are fun to use, and absolutely essential in some of the boss battles. You get to use a taser, light saber, and flame thrower to name a few with each having their own animations. There is a wonderful blend between the 8-bit characters and the high res world, and it's nice to get tasks from the members of the band. The social connectivity adds to potential replayability. Add friends in the game, and leveling up will unlock more items to customize your avatar, and spend more time in the Linkin Park world. Online high scores and achievements are also included for a little extra incentive. Once you beat the whole game you get access to a special track called Blackbirds which is nice little prize for completing a game. The Bad The main problem with the game is that it's quite short for $5 with many longer games that are cheaper in the App Store market. The game doesn't take but a couple hours, and then there really isn't much left. The game is definitely fun as you go from task to task, but it comes to such a quick end. The game doesn't have much complexity so serious gamers may be bored. One thing to note is that it's a solid game whether you like Linkin Park or not. The Verdict Linkin Park 8-Bit Rebellion is a solid game that provides a unique experience rather than simply a game. The game has a nice story and task completion mechanic to have you want to get through the game with a special song at the end. With that said you will get through the game quick which is disappointing after paying $5. Linkin Park 8-Bit Rebellion is worth considering depending on if a fun, but short unique experience is worth $5 when you can get more depth for cheaper. Whether you're a Linkin Park fan or not this is an enjoyable game.
