From E3: Sneak Peek of Disney's Upcoming Tron for iPhone

June 17, 2010

During E3 we sat down with Disney Mobile to take a look at their upcoming Tron game that goes with the upcoming movie Tron Legacy. The game is still a ways out with an expected release around the launch of the movie which is in December. Disney is looking to spend a lot of time working on this game with plans for multiple updates. When the game launches there will be a tanks based single player mode which plays like a top down adventure game. There will be 15 levels with each having multiple objectives to figure out, and lasting a few minutes. A multiplayer tanks game will also be included to play online and locally over bluetooth. Disney plans to continue working on the game with a goal of monthly updates. The updates will add new gameplay modes including a light bikes style with a 2D and 3D mode. There will be a disc mode with a swiping mechanic also in 2D and 3D. A 3D tanks mode will be coming as well, and in total there will be six gameplay modes. The pricing model isn't decided, but it looks like Disney is going to make the app free with one in app purchase to unlock the whole game. If you buy it early all the new updates will be free as you unlock the whole game once at whatever stage your purchase. The goal is to release the game about a month before the movie, and have a new update out for the movie release. We got some hands on time with the tanks game, and it's really well made with easy controls. There are nice sequences where you have to figure out what to do rather than just moving forward like so many other games. See our video below of the game in action.
