Filmmaking On An iPhone 4

June 29, 2010

If you are one of the few people that isn't interested in buying an iPhone 4, this might change your mind. Director Michael Koerbel of Makek Pictures has released a short film entitled "Apple of My Eye" shot and edited entirely with his iPhone 4 and the iMovie iPhone app. Take a look:

In five minutes of film, Koerbel shows the terrific clarity of the HD video capabilities of the iPhone 4. Couple that with the $4.99 iMovie for iPhone app, and you can see how amateur filmmaking is possible for a few dollars. Notice how the filmaker takes advantage of the iPhone 4's backside illumination sensor, which delivers great-looking video regardless of how much light is available.  As you can see, "Apple of My Eye" does make great use of the iPhone 4's LED light. As a model train buff, this film brought back the happy memories of me as a kid watching Lionel trains speeding around our Christmas tree.  Three seconds into watching the video, I forgot the film was produced on an iPhone, and that is exactly the point.  The iPhone 4 allows filmmaking for the masses, whether one is a pro or amateur. It took 48 hours for Koerbel to make his short masterpiece. He is a graduate student at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
