Remote Controls: Lots Of Apps For That

June 5, 2010

The iTunes App store is featuring forty-seven “Apps to Control Your World” this weekend. Among those profiled are those new and old to the store, ranging in prices from free to much, much more. Apple’s own Remote is included here, which was the first iTunes app released in 2008. Also, be sure to check out the $899.99 iRa Pro, which provides mobile video surveillance from your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Each app that is included here seem to fall into four distinct remoting categories. Touch apps, are those simple apps that control your iPod, Mac or presentation. For example, Melloware’s RiverMote app provides slick control of your J. River Media Center anywhere in your house. Photo apps are those apps that are used for camera or photo editing control. RPA Tech, Inc’s PhotoKeys: Photoshop Remote gives Photoshop users a secondary device to which to control your application shortcuts and toolbar. Computer control apps, such as MochaSoft’s Mocha VNC and RealVNC’s VNC Viewer give remote access to your home or workplace workstation or server. Finally, you have Lifestyle remote apps that make your daily life easier. Whether it be programming your upcoming television viewing schedule (Directv, Comcast apps) or your home’s sound system (Sonos Controller, for example), there is certainly an app for that.
