Pangea VR Update Shows The Beauty Of The Retina Display
June 24, 2010
To experience the Retina display in all of its glory on the new iPhone 4, look no further than the Pangea VR app from Pangea Software, Inc.
Pangea VR is a utility for interactively viewing VR panoramas on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Using a database of panorama "portfolios," the app presents various panoramic images from photographers all over the world. Once you download the free app, you simply select a "portfolio" and escape to another place. Using Automatic, Portrait, or Landscape view, you can visit London, Hong Kong or Rome, or even a Japanese Sake Brewery, just to name a few. Best of all, you can upload your own panoramic images for the rest of the world to see. All you have to do is post your photos on a website and then point the app to that location. Your photos will need to be JPEG files and should be 360 degree equirectangular panoramic images with a 2:1 width to height ratio. The iPhone and iPod touch app version of Pangea VR is free, although you have to pay $14.99 for the iPad HD version. Of course, it is on the iPhone 4 with its Retina display that makes the photos look so crisp, distinguished and breathtaking. It is exciting to speculate when the Retina display will make its way to other Apple hardware platforms because this has just wet our appetite for more. Below are just a few of the panoramic images that I found on my new iPhone 4 using the Pangea VR app, although still images don't do the app much justice. In addition, it should be noted that the Pangea VR app is one of the first to include Apple's iAds, although I didn't find them to be distracting in the least.
