Wait! You May Already Own an iPhone 4 Dock!
July 1, 2010
You may want to put that order for a new iPhone 4 dock on hold, amigos. As it turns out, if you have a 1st gen iPhone dock, you also have an iPhone 4 dock.
I got a tip from my friend and AppAdvice reader, RobertP this morning informing me that he had just hooked up his old 1st gen iPhone dock to his laptop and placed his wife's iPhone 4 in the cradle...and it began charging.
I was anxious to test it for myself, so as soon as I got home, I dusted off my old original iPhone dock that came with my original iPhone, and I placed my new iPhone 4 in it. To my glorious surprise, it fit! It's a tiny bit (and I do mean "tiny") on the snug side, but seeing as how I just saved $30 on buying a dock for my iPhone 4, the fit is as good as "perfect".
Compared to the original iPhone, the iPhone 4 is slightly taller, slightly thinner and slightly more narrow, so technically speaking, this fit should come as no surprise, but it's likely that this fact has escaped many of us as we gladly upgrade to an iPhone 4 and watch our old iPhones become obsolete...especially those "ancient" 1st gen iPhones.
So the real question is "does it work?" I can confirm that my iPhone 4 is plugged into my original iPhone dock, the phone is charging, iTunes sees it, and the line out also works flawlessly, as indicated by the Red Hot Chili Peppers song playing on my stereo as I type.
So for those of you who either got rid of your original iPhone dock or would rather pay much, much less than $30 for a dock, you may be in luck. This shop on Amazon has them on clearance for $11 plus $3 for shipping and these guys have refurbished ones for 1¢ plus $4.99 for shipping.
Of course, using an original iPhone dock for your iPhone 4 will only thrill you if you and your iPhone 4 like to go "au naturel", as the dock will only fit an iPhone 4 without a case or bumper, as was the case with the original iPhone. So if you have bought a case for the purpose of saving your iPhone 4 from the negative effects of your butter fingers and gravity, this news may not benefit you. But if you were considering a case as a result of Apple's antenna attenuation issues, does this sway you toward a wrap?
Either way, for all the heat Steve and Johnny Ive's latest iPhone design has taken in the last week, this is definitely a mark in the "plus" column, albeit a small one. Don't you agree?
