NYT App Updated, But Still Just A "Choice"

June 9, 2010

When the iPad was announced in January, one of the main apps shown to the world was the New York Times "Editor's Choice"  app.  Unfortunately, when iPad users found out that the app did not contain even a handful of the articles found on the venerable publication's own website, critics cried fowl.  Today's app update addresses this concern, if ever slightly.

While the app is still named "Editor's Choice" (meaning you don't get everything from the New York Times own website), it does contain some more sections, including one called Arts and another called Videos. The Arts section contains book, dance, music, and television reviews, which were lacking in the previous release.  Today's Video section includes snippets on "India's Highways of Death"  and the TimesCast from earlier this week.  Three other videos are also included. You can now also share stories with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or through email.  However, a search function and links to previous articles is still missing from the app. Overall, however, as this week's New York Times versus Pulse development shows us, it is clear that The New York Times Company has no intention of offering all of its articles for free, on the iPad or anywhere else.  However, the app update is certainly a step in the right direction.
