Firefox Home Now In The App Store
As expected, Apple finally got around to approving the Firefox Home syncing iPhone app last night, and it's now available for download in the App Store.
As a reminder, Firefox Home is an app that allows you to keep your bookmarks, history and open tabs synced between your desktop and your iDevice. It relies on Firefox's Sync plugin, so you're forced to use this browser for it to work. Yet, the features might make it worthwhile for some of you.
I've been using it a bit this morning, along with the Firefox 4 beta 1, and it works as advertised. The app is iPhone only for now, but you can pixel-double it on the iPad and it will actually look good. Unfortunately, that seems to kill the "open in Safari" or Mail feature. Regarding that; Firefox Home uses webkit to display the links you select. The problem is they haven't put much effort into designing it and you're just getting a very basic web view. We know it's not their engine, but from a company that makes an internet browser, we could expect a bit more of an effort I think.
Here is the app's teaser, which they released at the app's submission:
All in all, it's not going to make me dump Safari. If a Safari extension that works with it comes along, however, I might keep it somewhere on my Home Page.
