Two iPhone Download Meter Apps Updated
July 14, 2010
With AT&T now setting monthly iPhone data limits, download meter apps are becoming more popular. Two of the better known apps have recently been updated. Each is different in how they handle data tracking, but both can help users avoid paying overage charges which can prove costly.
Download Meter for Wi-Fi/3G/EDGE/GPRS by HedonicSoft calculates the amount of data an iPhone transfers to and from the Internet over a period of time. Best of all, the app is entirely customizable based on user preferences. Monthly, weekly and daily data limits can be set and are automatically updated as the iPhone is used each day. The amount of traffic consumed resets on a day defined as the beginning of the user’s billing month. As its name suggests, Download Meter calculates 3G, EDGE, GPRS and Wi-Fi data amounts. After using Download Meter for only a few hours, I can definitely see the advantages of using it. Its design is effective and simple, yet packs a lot of features. Best of all, it shows real-time statistics taken directly from the iPhone. The app is available in the App Store for $1.99. Consume, by bjango is a multipurpose tracking device. Built for simplicity, Consume monitors mobile phone and broadband usage by accessing a user's data numbers directly from the service provider. Unlike Download Meter, Consume offers no “real-time” data analysis. The data pulled from the service provider is all that is show within the app. On a positive note, the app is designed to work in 17 different countries. Consume is free and an iPad version of the app is expected soon.
