IsoCards Update Adds iPhone Support, New Card Games, And Poker Chips
July 8, 2010
IsoCards by indie developer Opetopic was one of the very first apps that I tried on my brand new iPad way back when the iPad App Store first launched. The concept was truly inspiring, allowing you to play any type of card game you desired while giving you the ability to use every finger on your hands if you so pleased. It even sported a nifty cupping feature that allowed you to have multiple players on the same device without revealing your hand to everyone else.
All of this was exciting at the time, but without a more fleshed out experience, there has been little reason to come back to it as of late. But yesterday that all changed with IsoCards v1.1, which added iPhone support, poker chips, and suites of card games, among a few other features.
IsoCards now allows you to transfer one of the decks from your iPad to your iPhone or iPod touch via Bluetooth in order to free up some space on the screen. Doing so is relatively easy. Just add a player to the game and tap on the circle at the bottom of the glass holder in order to sync your devices. The holder will move to the edge of the screen indicating it's ready to go. Now when you deal cards to that specific holder, they will go straight to your iPhone or iPod touch. Cards can then be managed remotely and flicked to the top of the iPhone's screen to bring them back over to the iPad's.
IsoCards now features a suite of actual ruled card games available as $.99 in-app purchases. Right now 11 of the 12 games are variations of solitaire, with the other game being Speed, an intense multiplayer game. More variations will be added in the future.
You are also able to add poker chips to your playing field, which are multi-touch capable just like the cards. Some less important but still worthy changes and additions include the ability to automatically deal cards, the ability to gather all cards or just the cards on the table, card dragging and throwing improvements, and the removal of unnecessary buttons on the table.
If you downloaded IsoCards for free when the iPad App Store just launched and have let it sink to the back page of your device, I recommend giving it another look. A lot has changed since then.
IsoCards is now available for $1.99. It's a universal app, so once you pay for one version, you can download and install it on all of your devices. Just remember that the iPhone and iPod touch version is merely an extension of the iPad game and not a game on its own.
