Mossberg Would Still Hang Up AT&T In Certain Situations

July 30, 2010

The Wall Street Journal’s tech expert Walter Mossberg has now used his iPhone 4 for six weeks and offered his readers his newest opinions on Apple's latest device.

Originally, Mossberg called the iPhone the "best device in its class" but was unhappy with Apple's continued reliance on AT&T. His most recent assessment hasn’t changed much but he did offer some clarity. Mossberg still feels that the iPhone 4 is the best smart phone on the market; one which works best in areas where AT&T is strongest. On the flip side, it is a disaster in areas where AT&T’s coverage is much worse. He said:
"So that’s my six-week, real-world report. Despite the hot-spot issue and the exposed antenna, the iPhone 4 does better than the 3GS for me in decent coverage. But I still wouldn’t advise adopting it as your primary phone if you live, work or travel in areas with poor AT&T reception, or if you prefer a network under less stress."
Also, he wrote that Apple’s Bumper fix did indeed work as expected, but not completely.  Problems still existed even with the case surrounding the iPhone 4. Mossberg further stated:
"I also spent a few days testing the “bumper” case Apple is now giving away to every iPhone 4 user. It greatly reduced what call problems I experienced, even in weak areas, though it didn’t entirely eliminate dropped calls, which occur even in good coverage."
Mossberg has been very open in his overall assessment that the iPhone is limited thanks to AT&T's exclusivity in the United States. His most recent comments indicate the same feelings. The expert's opinion is important in that he continues to offer high praise to Apple and to its latest iPhone. It's AT&T that gets most of his criticism. The entire article is available here.
