New Photography App Has Depth, But Might Put You To Sleep

July 23, 2010

The digital age has made it easier for anyone to take a good picture. However, there are techniques that novice photographers could learn that would make their photos better or even extraordinary.

Recently, PeachPit; publishers of technology books, videos and ebooks released a new app. Its title (get ready for it): Scott Kelby’s Photo Recipes Live: Behind the Scenes: Your Guide to Today’s Most Popular Lighting Techniques. Kelby is the best selling author of The Digital Photography Book, Volumes 1-3. The app is full of useful information for the next great photographer. It is designed around sixteen “Photo Recipes” with topics ranging from taking portraits of couples to shooting food. Each chapter includes “bite-size” video clips (or full-length ones), and behind the scenes information from the author himself. Photo Recipes Live is essentially an extension of The Digital Photography Book, which is part of its problem. The publishers took what works in print, added some videos and expected something special. Instead, the app is (shall I say it) boring. The app works as advertised, but I grew tired of the concept quickly. If anything, it felt like a chore to use the app. The information presented is valuable and plentiful but the app’s overall execution could put the most dedicated of viewers to sleep. Scott Kelby’s Photo Recipes LIve: Behind the Scenes: Your Guide to Today’s Most Popular Lighting Techniques is available for $9.99 in the App Store for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
