Review: Rocket Sheep Rampage - Plus We're Giving Away Five Copies!

Overview

Rocket Sheep Rampage is a new casual endless game where you head up the highway constantly picking up speed while avoiding traffic. There are three lanes on the highway, and you simply tap the lane for the rocket shape to fly over to. As you progress you build up the rampage meter which when full, will turn you into a battering ram allowing you to blast through traffic rather than avoid it.

Features

While the sheep is rocketing down the road you will need to make jumps over toxic spills by being in the lane with the boost ramp. Also, intermittently aircraft will fly over trying to drop a bomb on you which you will need to dodge. Online high scores are included via OpenFeint, but no achievements.

The Good

The game is simple fast paced fun that you know, from any experience of casual endless games, you simply tap to move from lane to lane to dodge a constant flow of traffic. The best aspect is that the longer you travel the faster you go making it that much tougher with not only the usual of more obstacles, but also at much higher speeds. If the traffic wasn’t enough to dodge you will come across ramps which require you to be in one specific lane. You will also need to dodge bombs that attempt to lock on to you. As you’re flying down the road it will take plenty of concentration to stay alive. Luckily it’s not all dodging, as you can build up your rage meter to go on the offensive. Then it’s a whole new game as you try to hit every car you see to keep your rage meter up to stay on the offensive. It’s a great change of pace in the game, and you’ll desperately want it because the closer you get to filling the meter the faster you’ll be going. The game really requires quick reaction times as the game goes at a faster pace than most casual endless games if not all of them. It’s fun rocketing around at break neck speeds never knowing when you have to move, and always keeping an eye on the top of the screen. There is a quality soundtrack included with an action based theme that fits so well with the style. The game features high quality visuals with the 3D cars and rocket sheep. The animations are great too, highlighted by the rocket exhaust tail that swerves behind you as you dodge cars. When you’re in rampage mode the camera switches from bird’s eye to level view, and you can really see the 3D action and the flowing of rammed cars.

The Bad

The game has a relatively simplistic mechanic that does get old relatively quickly. There’s no doubt it’s fun a couple times through, but then you’ve seen everything in the game. There are online high scores which are essential for casual endless, but there isn’t enough variability in the gameplay itself. If this game was released awhile back there would be a whole different standard, but in today’s App Store there is a need for higher variability to stand out. You dodge cars over and over with the occasional jump and bomb dodge and that’s the game. The controls aren’t the most precise as there are instances when you think you tap one lane, and the sheep goes to another, but that’s simply because the tap area is so small.

The Verdict

Rocket Sheep Rampage is another in a long line of casual endless games, and it’s a solid game that is extremely well built. The game is fun and fast paced with constant action and a nice change of pace rage meter. With that said it doesn’t really stand out in a crowded genre, and there are better games available like Bird Strike and Run!
