Risk Conquers The U.S. App Store

July 22, 2010

Risk first appeared in the New Zealand App Store late yesterday afternoon, and it has since worked its way across the world and has now finally taken over the U.S. App Store. EA's digital version of Risk is an officially licensed remake of the classic board game by Hasbro.  The game sports an updated look, with scan lines all over the place, but still features the tried and true Risk gameplay. When setting up your army, you can grab territories manually or allow them to be chosen at random.  Before the game starts you are able to allocate units to your territories.  On-screen indicators and buttons -- defend, attack, fortify, etc. -- are all there to help you succeed in battle. When it's the AI's turn to play, very little time is wasted getting back to your turn, which allows the game to flow nicely. The game allows you to take on up to six AI or human controlled opponents in a friendly game of world domination.  The AI features three difficulty levels.  The downside, as is the case for most of EA's games, is that Risk's multiplayer is local-only, offering pass and play and local Wi-Fi.  It also features stat tracking and achievements. If you thoroughly enjoy the game of Risk, this is a nice addition to your mobile lineup for $4.99.  It's sad, however, that EA didn't go the extra mile and add some bells and whistles to the game like The Coding Monkeys did with Carcassonne, which is one of the best board-to-digital conversations available in the App Store.
