Spotify Music App Updated For iOS4

July 8, 2010

The Spotify iPhone music app has been updated to include support for iOS4. Developed by Swedish startup “Spotify AB”, the app is only available in Sweden, Spain, Norway, Finland, France, the Netherlands and the UK. The app allows Spotify premium music subscribers access to the service’s full music catalogue through streaming and when disconnected using an offline mode feature.

Thanks to iOS4, Spotify iPhone Music app users can now listen to music in the background, while streaming or stored in a local cache. Originally launched in the Apple App Store in September 2009, the Spotify iPhone Music app can be downloaded for free in the countries mentioned above. Music from major and independent record labels including Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group and Universal are currently available. In June, TechCrunch indicated that a U.S. launch of Spotify was coming, although due to contractual issues with Warner Music Group, the launch has been delayed. According to the companies website, Spotify has seven million users worldwide, of that total about 250,000 are premium customers. The service debuted in October 2008. Unlike other services, Spotify plays music live so there is no download time or hard drive space required on a user's Mac or PC.
