Jailbreak Only: Signal App Maps Cell Towers Near You

August 4, 2010

Enthusiastic about the GSM standard and all those towers that bring ubiquitous Internet to your iPhone? Well, Planetbeing, the baseband and unlock expert of the iPhone Dev-Team has an app for you.

Called "Signal", and available on the jailbreak for $5, it allows you to find out everything you ever wanted to know about the mobile side of your iPhone. For starters, it provides you with signal, frequency and a bunch of other data that I personally have no idea about. Most interestingly, however, it provides you with a live Google map, showing your location, and all the cell phone towers near you. It provides information about which towers your phone knows about, which one you're using, and the tower's signal strength. Here it is on video:

It's an übergeeky and very powerful app. But, when you think about it, $5 sounds a bit steep for something that doesn't have all that much use. I guess that knowing, in the process, you're supporting Planetbeing's effort to unlock your iPhone should however totally make it worth it.

Signal app by Planetbeing is available on Cydia now for $5.
