Meow Meow Happy Fight Brings The Dual-Stick Shooter Genre Into The Arena

August 5, 2010

Indie developer Big Pixel Studios decided to put down their Piyo Blocks for a while and dabble in the dual-stick shooter genre.  What they were able to come up with was Meow Meow Happy Fight, a Japanese style dual-stick shooter that does away with the wave after wave of enemies and places you in a death match arena battle. Meow Meow Happy Fight is set in modern-day Tokyo, filled with bright neon lights and happy characters that want nothing more than to destroy you.  You have to fight back in an arena battle to the death, where you will attempt to wrack up the most kills before time expires.  Each level has you pitted against other fairly intelligent AI controlled opponents who are equally armed with blasters.  You will have to utilize the environment and the many power-ups in order to top the leaderboards and move on to the next level.
“With Meow Meow Happy Fight we’ve created a game based around a simple mechanic, which gradually expands into something much more in-depth and skill demanding,” said Paul Virapen, Big Pixel Studios Managing Director. David Burpitt, Technical Director at Big Pixel Studios, added, “We put a big focus on the AI of opponents. They move, think and act as if they were controlled by real players, and can often out-smart you with a special attack, or cheekily snatch a kill after you've put in all the hard work.”
The game features a total of 24 levels, 12 power-ups that are unlocked as you progress, 15 characters that can be obtained by collecting happy points, which are dropped when a character dies, and OpenFeint integration. Those hoping for another  Minigore-like dual-stick shooter will need to look elsewhere, as Meow Meow Happy Fight is focused on providing death match style combat.  It's too bad that the game doesn't currently contain a multiplayer mode, because it would definitely add to the already entertaining gameplay.  Hopefully one of the new game modes Big Pixel Studios plans to offer via future updates will be just that. Meow Meow Happy Fight is now available in the App Store for the introductory and early adopter-friendly price of $.99.  Its price will be raised shortly to $2.99, so get it on the cheap while you can. Also, you can pick up Big Pixel Studios Piyo Blocks for free right now, and Piyo Blocks 2 is on sale for $1.99 to celebrate Meow Meow Happy Fight's launch.
