OpenFeint Launches Cross-Platform SMS And Email Invite System

August 18, 2010
Earlier this year, Aurora Feint announced that they would be "taking their talents to Android."  Now the company is looking to bring iOS and Android gamers even closer by allowing them to send SMS and email invites to any contact on their phone, no matter the platform.
“One glaring problem with today’s mobile gaming community is how fractured it is across platforms, OpenFeint is bridging the gap between gamers,” says Peter Relan, Executive Chairman of Aurora Feint. “As we expand cross platform this summer, we’re going to roll out services that will help friends that use different device platforms play against each other.”
OpenFeint v2.6, which is now available for download through the company's developer portal, is intended to give players the tools they need to share the games they most enjoy with each other without any platform bias.  Players will be able to type up their own personal message and send it to any of their contacts via SMS or email.  The message will also contain a link to the game in question. This should not only help players, but also the developers looking to expand their reach.  OpenFeint currently has a user base of 35 million players, all of which will be able to share their love for a game with their Android buddies.  Apparently Aurora Feint has also implemented safegards to prevent spamming, in case any of you were concerned. But SMS and email invites aren't the only new additions to OpenFeint v2.6.  The company has also added a new time-based leaderboard system that includes geo-location services.  Expect even more great things from the company and its social service even as Apple's own Game Center approaches.
