Movie Vault for iPad ($4.99) by Fling Soft LLC gives you an entire collection of classic movies to stream at your fingertips.
When the app is first launched, it will be fetching the current movie catalog available in the app. In future use, if there are any new movies, the app will automatically refresh and download them.
There are several categories of movies to choose from, each with plenty of movies filling it. It was quite surprising how many movies there are in the app's catalog, which is over 1000 movies currently. The interface is pretty amazing, representing the classic bookshelf and thumbnails of the movie cover representing little DVDs (or maybe videotapes?) on the shelves. Each category is topped off with its own special and unique text that complete the overall unique and slick interface.
You can scroll through the movie categories by using the arrows at the top of the screen, or if you already know what you're in the mood for, use the drop down menu at the top left corner to see all the genres and jump to what you want. No fuss.
When you find a movie you want to watch, tap it and it will have a little pop up giving you a quick summary of the movie as well as give you information on director, original date (year), writers, actors, and the duration of the film. When you're ready to watch the movie, just hit the 'Watch movie' button and it plays like any other video on an iDevice.
These movies are actually streaming (hey, it would take up a lot of GBs if it wasn't) and the quality of them depends on your data connection. They play over both Wifi and 3G, so if you have a Wifi + 3G iPad, you basically have this movie collection everywhere. If you're like me and just have the Wifi iPad, well you can get this collection of movies anywhere with Wifi! Fair enough for $5, really.
I did notice that this app tends to crash a lot, but it's nothing major considering what you're getting. When I finished watching a movie and hit 'Done', it crashed and I had to go back into the app if I wanted to watch something else. It may also crash if you do more tapping in the app than watching. But when you really think about it, $5 for all of these movies available anytime is a real bargain, so the crashing isn't really a big deal because it doesn't happen if you just relax and watch.
This is one of the reasons the iPad was made - movie consumption. And with over 1000 classic movies available instantly on the iPad, why wouldn't you get this app? Unless you are looking only looking for recent stuff, then this app isn't for you.
So what are you waiting for? Get this app and grab some popcorn and relax. This app has the original Night of the Living Dead, which makes it worth the cost already.
