QuickAdvice: OC Register for iPad

OC Register for iPad (Free) by Freedom Communications Inc. is the official app for the OC Register, now on the iPad.

Originally only an iPhone app, the OC Register has just released their iPad version of the app today. With the iPad's larger screen, it makes reading the articles and watching videos a much better experience than on the small iPhone screen.

The app first launches into the Top News section, which are just the most popular stories going on right now. Tapping on the little file cabinet icon will get you to see the other categories, which include: My News (a fancy little term for showing the categories of articles), Videos, Lates, and even Saved. Yes, you can save articles for reading later.

The OC Register app for iPad also caches the text of all articles, so you can read even without an Internet connection. The only thing that is missing are the photos.

When viewing articles, the text size can be changed to a bigger font, although it doesn't seem like it's enough. Maybe in an update they can add more sizes, because the 'large' font didn't seem to be that much larger, in all honesty.

The app allows you to go through articles with little arrow buttons at the top menu bar. You can also view the article in mobile Safari if you choose (perhaps to comment, or something along those lines). Articles can also be shared via e-mail, Facebook, or Twitter (these seem like a mandatory requirement nowadays, isn't it?) either by the button at the top or by scrolling to the bottom of the article. Your Facebook and Twitter accounts must be configured in the Settings first though, located inside the app.

The entire app is viewable in either Portrait or Landscape mode, with Portrait having the button to display the other sections while Landscape splits the screen into two sections.

The app is free and supported by ads, but personally, sometimes I prefer news apps to just have a paid version and get rid of the annoying ads. You may have a different view though, I just prefer no ads

Overall, this is a great iPad version of the OC Register app. It's pretty basic though, nothing fancy. But it delivers all of the OC Register's content straight to your iPad, and even allows for offline reading. If you are a fan of the OC Register, I'd suggest you pick this free app up now.

It's the OC. Delivered straight to your iPad. Seriously, the iPad is a great news consumption device. This just adds to the greatness of the iPad.
