QuickAdvice: Quickly Mashup Memories to Share with Video Edit for iPhone 3GS/4

August 6, 2010

Video Edit ($1.99) by Video Edit is a light video editor for your iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, with a special introductory price for it's entrance into the App Store.

Before you compare it to something like ReelDirector or iMovie, don't. This app serves a different purpose. This app is not meant to be a tool used to create a short film or anything fancy. No, this app is meant to take a couple of video clips on your phone and mash them together into one video so you can easily share it with friends and family.

The app itself is fast - launch it, start a new project, add a couple of clips, hit the green check mark to render to the Camera Roll, and BOOM! You're done! Add a title if you wish to differentiate your projects, and you can reorder your clips by tap and holding a clip and move it to another spot.

There is no fancy themes, no transitions, no text on video, none of that. It's just bare bones editing, which is great for just sharing those spontaneous moments you will either cherish forever or regret later.

The video rendering in this app is extremely fast, but that's because that's the purpose - quickly mash up some videos together to share. It does one thing and it does it very well. There are no fancy additions for it to render, such as in ReelDirector and iMovie.

The most important thing to note, however, is that if you're using an iPhone 4 and use this app, don't expect HD video. I tested with PixelPipe (which will upload any HD video from the iPhone 4) and my YouTube video had maximum resolution of 360p.

This is a great app if you want to do some quick editing of video clips. And by editing I mean just mashing them together. If you're looking for something to get some bare bones editing quickly, and don't care for the loss of resolution on an iPhone 4, then I'd recommend this app.

And for the intro price of $1.99, I see very little reason why you wouldn't get this app if you need something like this.

Another quick thing to note - the app crashed on me a couple of times, but no data was lost. I just reopened the app again and everything was there the last I left it. The developer mentions this on the app description page, and recommends restarting the phone. They will remain open about any crash reports.
