Rumor: Apple To Announce 3G-Enabled iPod Touch

August 30, 2010
Apple's special September event is right around the corner. As usual, it's time for the most interesting/crazy rumors. The latest rumor, coming from AppleInsider, is that Apple might announce something this Wednesday that would just blow our minds; a 3G-enabled iPod touch. Imagine, the iPod touch 3G would be exactly what the iPad 3G is to the iPad. It's the same device, but with the additional capability of connecting to a 3G network, using a pre-paid AT&T contract-free data plan. Now that would be a revolution! I mean, with Skype running in the background, this could be the real iPhone-killer. And, it's absolutely feasible. As much as I want to believe it's possible, it doesn't sound too likely. In the past, Apple has always considered the iPod touch to be like the little brother of the iPhone. It was always a generation behind in terms of features and I'd be very surprised to see Apple change that dynamic. Yet who knows? It would be quite a revolution with huge consequences on the industry and I'm sure Apple may be considering it. With data networks getting better, the phone as we know it will die eventually to be replaced entirely by VoIP. Apple could, with the iPod touch 3G, launch that revolution. Can Apple pull this off? Would carriers even consider such a device? Guess we'll find out soon enough.
