Buganoids Is Backflip Studios' Final Free Game Of The Summer
September 16, 2010
Backflip Studios is capping off their summer of free games with Buganoids, an ad-based retro shooter available immediately for both iPhone and iPad.
Buganoids, as described by the developers, is "Tempest meets Centipede with a dash of Gyruss thrown in," which is basically saying that the game pays homage to the classic arcade games of the early '80s.
In the game, your mission is to wipe out the hordes of evil alien creatures trying to destroy you by running around planets and shooting anything that moves. The creatures will invade from the holes in the middle of the planets, and you must fire one of your many weapons directly down in order to blast them to bits.
Some creatures will make it to the surface, while others will fly above you. The only way to hit those creatures is to position yourself on the opposite side of the planet and fire, since you can only shoot down. This adds an interesting gameplay dynamic. If you are in dire trouble, you can always use your single bomb to clear out everything on the planet.
The game features a total of eight planets to conquer, three difficulty levels, five different weapons to pick up, 8-bit retro graphics, and OpenFeint integration.
Buganoids for iPhone and Buganoids HD for iPad are both available for free in the App Store. They are ad-based, but those ads can be removed for $.99.
