Video: Preview Of The First iPhone Xvid & DivX Player: CineXPlayer

September 15, 2010
Apps like CineXPlayer or the upcoming VLC for iPad bring a great feature to our iPads: the ability to watch DivX and Xvid video files. Most videos found online need to be re-encoded to play on the iPad. Thanks to these players, you can skip the encoding and just drag and drop your files through iTunes, thereby saving a lot of time. The task requires a lot of raw power and has been limited to the iPad so far. However, thanks to the arrival of the iPhone 4, and many optimizations, the folks over at NXP Software have just managed to bring their CineXPlayer app to the iPhone 4 and 3GS. They've been kind enough to provide us with a preview. It works great and should read all your Xvid files. According to the developers it is also supposed to work with most DivX files. Unfortunately, in my brief testing, that wasn't the case as I ran into a file that it wouldn't play. Also, its developers tell me the upcoming version will also bring with it AC3 support, MKV playback, TV-out, subtitles, as well as Cinemasound. It will be a matter of a couple weeks until it's available.

It should retail for about $1.99, assuming that Apple approves it.
