The New iPod touch: The Specifics
September 2, 2010
The fourth generation iPod touch announced yesterday is a very cool looking piece of technology. It features a Retina display and two cameras: one for FaceTime and the other for HD video recording. Inside, it contains Apple's A4 chip which provides for fast processing and also a three-axis gyroscope for great gaming.
The device will ship with iOS 4.1. Three models are available, they are all the same except for their included storage space: 8GB ($229), 32GB ($299) and 64GB ($399). This is the first time since the first and second generation models that an 8GB iPod touch is being made available.
The display includes a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display with 960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 pixels per inch.
Apple claims that the rechargeable lithium-ion battery allows listening to up to 40 hours of music or seven hours of video playback on a full charge. This is slightly better than the third generation model which claimed 30 and 6 hours, respectively.
Video recording is 720p HD, up to 30 frames per second with audio. Still photos are taken at 960 x 720 with the back camera. The front camera is capable of VGA-quality photos and video up to 30 frames per second.
The iPod touch comes with earphones, a dock connector to USB Cable and a Quick Start guide.
The latest iPod touch is expected to begin shipping next week, it will be available at retail stores and at Apple.com.
The iPod touch is Apple's foremost media player and gaming machine. Debuting in 2007, the device has been updated each fall. For more on its technical specifications please go to Apple.com.
