Rapid Review: Press Your Luck HD - No More Whammies!
Press Your Luck ™ HD ($4.99) by Ludia It's time to press your luck on your iPad with the release of Press Your Luck HD by Ludia. The classic game show of going for big bucks and no whammies is now in glorious HD. The game is similar to the iPhone version with the same gameplay set up of 16 different game shows to play in single player mode.
You play against two other players, and when you win you unlock the next match with each one increasing in difficulty. There is also a multiplayer mode giving you the ability to play with up to three others on the same iPad, though if you play with less than three the computer doesn't automatically fill in the empty spots. As you progress in single player mode you earn wardrobe items to customize your avatar.
The perspective hasn't changed, and the gameplay is the same as the iPhone version. The Press Your Luck set does look great in the iPad, but there aren't any newly introduced items or features. The game is simply for iPad owners to experience Press Your Luck without the double pixel mode.
If you own the iPhone version you will see nothing new here, but that doesn't mean the game isn't fun in its own right. It's great deciding to keep spinning for more money with always the chance to lose it all or simply passing, and hoping the other person doesn't beat your score. It's great playing the classic game and stopping the whammy board shouting “no more whammies”.
The game structure of 16 different shows is a nice challenge to keep you going, but the beginning games are way too easy so that can turn some people off. Once you get into the harder games it seems the other players rarely get whammies, and you get more. It's not as though they're getting better in the trivia section as still you can ring in easily, and they don't even guess the same answer as you.
Press Your Luck HD allows for iPad owners to get on the classic game show action, and it's worth the price of $4.99 if you've ever heard of Press Your Luck. Some changes from the iPhone version would be great, but the iPad version is just for iPad owners who don't have an iPhone or have never seen that version.
