Review: Aliens Need Brains - Gyroscope Don't Fail Me Now

September 9, 2010

Overview

It seems that zombies aren't the only ones who want brains as aliens are now getting in on the brain eating action. The game offers you a chance to take full advantage of your iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4 as it incorporates the gyroscope and retina display. You're in central park in one position, and you tilt your device to aim to blast away all the aliens coming your way.

Features

The game is endless so you try to last as many days as you can, and there is a meter at the top showing you how many more aliens you will need to destroy for the current day. You have seven different weapons to fire at six types of aliens that come at you in bunches. You have a 180 degree range to cover against incoming aliens.

The Good

If you just got the new iPod Touch or have an iPhone 4, and want to really use the new features Aliens Need Brains is the game to do it. You tilt your device to pan the camera as well as set the aim to put you in full control of the shooter. It really feels like you’re there holding the gun twisting back and forth to protect every side of you. No longer do you have to swipe or deal with some other mechanic to see the whole view. The best way to play the game is in a swivel chair so you can use your legs to spin yourself, and hold the device steady in your hands to aim. Not only does the game incorporate the gyroscope, but it does it wonderfully to give you silky smooth controls. The game looks great with the 3D environment on the retina display. The aliens are nicely detailed in their creepiness, and it's great to see their heads pop off when you kill them. There is a high quality sci-fi theme track that is mixed with the various noises of each type of alien. The mechanic isn't just neat, but completely engaging so it won't wear off rapidly. It's fun to keep going in the game, and you can even go for online high scores and achievements via OpenFeint.

The Bad

There isn't the most depth to this title, as once you've faced all six types of aliens everything just repeats simply with more. Another mode would help, or a concrete finish rather than only endless mode. The game does have finite finishes to each level indicated by a meter which has a flag when a huge wave of aliens are about to approach akin to Plants Vs Zombies.

The Verdict

Aliens Need Brains is the perfect game for the fourth generation idevice taking full advantage of the unique capabilities. Everything is well designed to engross you in the alien blasting experience as you swivel around canvassing the area for new aliens to shoot down. The game isn't simply a tech demo like Eliminate: Gun Range, and if you own the fourth generation iPhone or iPod Touch you owe it to yourself to get this experience. For $1.99 Aliens Need Brains is a must buy that is wonderfully unique and enjoyable.
