Review: Moonsters - Launching To The Stars

September 23, 2010

Overview

We gave you a sneak peek, and now the Moonsters have arrived, and it’s up to you to help them get off the strange planet, and back home. You slingshot them into the air trying to collect all the space tofu which can be used to get parts to fix up your spacecraft. There are three main characters who have different techniques, and sometimes need to work together.

Features

There are 90 different levels to launch through across nine chapters, and three different locations. To control you simply position the Moonster, then pull back, and launch adjusting for aim and power. The goal is to collect all the space tofu in a level which is used for spaceship parts, and when your spaceship is complete there are three different endings.

The Good

The Moonsters has a simple mechanic that becomes rather complex. All you do is slingshot the various characters up into the air, but then you have to deal with various platforms, bounceable objects, and using multiple characters. It’s one thing to pass every level, and quite another collecting every piece of space tofu, and that’s where the challenge lies. You’ll need a different strategy with each level, and you always need to take a look at the whole thing to see what you can use for your advantage. The game is tons of fun trying to get every last piece of tofu while interacting with the cute and fun world. It’s great to launch one character into another which then can go on a completely different path through the level. The Moonsters is a beautiful looking game with nine different alien worlds. The game is packed with detail, and it’s such a vivid world to look at intertwined with the animations of the three different characters. The soundtrack is upbeat throughout, and it’s the same as in the trailer below.

The Bad

There really isn’t much to dislike regarding the game. One concern is that the online high scores load in safari outside of the app rather than in-app. Also it would be nice to see how many spaceship parts are needed to finish the game, and see the ship being repaired. The ability to zoom in and out to see the whole level at once would definitely help the game. Right now you have to scroll around, and when you’re firing you can’t see all the space tofu at the same time.

The Verdict

The Moonsters is one of the best puzzle games around with a perfect pick up and play style to bring in everyone, but then also provide plenty of challenge. The game is exceptionally well designed with beautiful environments loaded with detail. There are a ton of levels each with unique challenges as you use each character’s skills, and even use them together. The Moonsters is a should buy for $1.99 that will be enjoyable for anyone.
