Review: Super Blast - Casual Endless Arcade Shooter

September 17, 2010

Overview

Aliens are invading, and it's up to you to blast them away in Super Blast. You tilt to move your little defender who fires automatically, and try to hit every single alien that drops. If one gets past you it's game over in this arcade shooter that's mixed with casual endless style.

Features

As you're firing away power-up weaponry drops to increase your firepower which is essential as more and more aliens come at once. If you get in a really sticky situation you can use the super blast by tapping on screen, and it replenishes. OpenFeint is included for online high score, though there are no achievements which could always help.

The Good

If you're looking for a straight forward arcade shooter then Super Blast should be on your radar. It brings the easy pick up and play for anyone’s mentality of casual endless games, and couples it with the fast paced nature of arcade shooters. Though the game starts simple enough with only tilting to aim, firing automatically, and one monster at a time you'll soon be facing stronger enemies in larger groups where power-ups and the super blast can't come fast enough. The game is score based with multiple bonuses for killed enemy combos, and thankfully online high scores are available via OpenFeint. Super Blast has amazingly deluxe visuals with a level of polish that is rarely seen whether it's the characters themselves or the explosions on destruction. There are ornate constantly moving backgrounds as well, plus an action sci-fi soundtrack.

The Bad

The game is simplistic so that every time you play the game begins with one green alien at a time, and then the yellow, red, and grey are introduced in larger and larger groups. The gameplay has as much variation as Doodle Jump in the placement of platforms and enemies. It really feels like the Doodle Jump of arcade shooters, but still an alternate mode would help. Also it would be nice to calibrate the tilt settings to add a little more precision, and maybe even a touch based control option.

The Verdict

Super Blast does a good job of bringing the fun action of an arcade shooter to the non-gamer. It's a casual endless game that's perfect for anyone to pick up and play. The game has a great visual style that is outstanding in action. Super Blast is worth considering for only $0.99, and is very similar to Doodle Jump in the game style, and changing backgrounds.
