Overview
Love them or hate them, zombies abound in the App Store, and the newest zombie fare is Zombie Highway. As you're driving down the road zombies leap onto your car from the side of the road, and you need to get them off ASAP. The zombies are trying to tip over your car, and you need to swipe into cars on the side of the road to get them off, or simply shoot them off.
Features
Zombie Highway is in the casual endless style where you try to make it as long as you can. The road is littered with abandoned vehicles, and as you reach certain distances you unlock new weapons. The game uses Facebook connect for online high score rankings.
The Good
As soon as you start racing down the road you'll be hooked on Zombie Highway. The game is simple for perfect pick up and play, and also offers plenty of challenge along the way. The zombies fly onto your car, and they vary in strength, in number of hits it takes to kill them, and time they take to tip your car.
All you do is tilt, and the controls are smooth to allow you to graze your car right up against others to rip the zombies off the side of your car. You can also shoot the zombies, but it takes a number of bullets to get rid of them, and your ammo is finite. What makes the game so enjoyable is the speed at which it moves with new zombies flying in, coupled with the chance to lose at any moment.
The zombies can tip your car at any time, and you can crash into the abandoned cars that litter the road. The zombies not only tip your car, but cause it to swerve enough that you can crash rather than swiping them off. There is never a dull moment in the game, and you can find yourself playing it over and over, and enjoying it each time.
The game has a great graphics engine with the 3D design of the objects on screen. It's great seeing the zombies ripped off your car when you graze another, or blasting them off with various weaponry. The car crashing, and zombie sound effects are nice, but more would help, and even a background soundtrack.
The Bad
The game itself does a great job in what it sets out to do, but it would be nice to see a little more. Another gameplay mode would do the game wonders, and so would better online connectivity including achievements beyond simple Facebook connect. Varying backgrounds other than driving in the desert would help to make each run feel a little different.
The Verdict
Zombie Highway is a great casual endless game that is enjoyable each time you play it. The game is spot on for pick and play, and will keep you racing down that highway more times than you're willing to admit. Every aspect is nicely designed, but it would be great to see a little bit more of this fun style.
For only $0.99 Zombie Highway is a should buy, so it's time to jump on the Zombie Highway, and try to survive.
