ZumoCast is a new service designed to allow you to quickly and easily stream almost any type of content from your Mac or Windows-based computer to your iPhone or iPad. ZumoCast not only allows you to instantly view all of your content, but you can also download it to your device, which is saved in an iOS friendly format, giving you the ability to experience your music, videos or documents while away from a Wi-Fi or 3G connection.
So how does it work? ZumoCast basically turns your computer into a personal cloud server, streaming your media library to your mobile devices upon demand. This makes all of your content instantly accessible, with no need to wait for a file to upload or pay a monthly.
The fluid UI allows you to jump to shared folders on your computer -- accessible folders can be specified from the desktop application -- or go directly to your music or video folders for quick viewing. Videos, music and other files, like images, are streamed to your iPhone or iPad in mere moments when tapped on, and you can scroll through them without much delay. Video quality is great over Wi-Fi, and not too shabby over 3G as long as AT&T is cooperating. Multiple files can be saved to your device by simply hitting the "Download" button and selecting the files you desire. You can even continue to view your videos, listen to your music or watch your picture slide show while all of this takes place.
ZumoCast, the app, is available for free in the App Store. The desktop software required to get your devices to recognize each other is also available for free on the ZumoCast website. Setup should only take a few minutes, and both pieces of software walk you through the process. You will need to sign up for a free account, which also enables you to view all of your content from any browser instead of just the universal app.
So far my experience with the app has been pretty great. ZumoCast supports all kinds of different formats, like MP4, AVI and QuickTime, so you shouldn't run into many problems when viewing content. The desktop app does have to do some indexing when first installed, but it doesn't take too long at all. Just give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
